Calling all Southern Cross men! Every now and then the time comes to take stock. We believe that now is such a time for the men of our church. On Thursday 28th August Mark Driscoll from Mars Hill church in Seattle USA will be speaking in Brisbane. He’ll be speaking as a Christian man to other Christian men, challenging us all to really live for Jesus and we want as many SCPC men as possible to be there.

The organisers of the event have drafted the following “statement of commitment” as a way of preparing all men for the night and for the challenge that will be issued. Have a read, and if it sounds like something that you want to be part of, let us know by commenting here on the website. Just identify yourself and say something like “I’m IN!” and we’ll save you a ticket.

300 Men for Jesus: Humbly acknowledging our own failures, we, the undersigned 300 men, challenge the men of our city to join us in getting serious about following Jesus. We confess we have often worshipped a convenient Jesus who has allowed us to continue unchallenged in our comfortable lives. We have made an idol for ourselves – a small, easy Jesus.

Because we want to repent of this, we have invited Mark Driscoll to unsettle our complacency and expand our view of the real Jesus. We will renew our efforts to grow as real Christian men who are faithful to our families, who fight hard against sexual temptation, who are honest and reliable in all our dealings, who seek to serve rather than be served, who are committed to our churches, who strive to be bold yet humble, and who bring honour to our Lord Jesus. ‘Burn your plastic Jesus’ and join us in this journey.

We’re aiming for 50 men from Southern Cross, so take the challenge and add your name to mine!

  1. Pastor Mark would be very worthwhile seeing in person. I often listen to his talks on the way to work and they inspire me to say inappropriate things all day long. The three best things about Mark are that; he loves Jesus (he never stops saying the word), he is very funny and he rejects light beer. Count me in.

  2. This seems to be a fairly frequent topic in our bible study (I don’t think I’m breaching confidentiality) in some form or other when it comes to prayer points. Presuming we are convicted to change our lives as a result of the talk, I think it would be a good idea if we coordinate some way of keeping ourselves accountable. I find accountability is the best thing for keeping me focussed, otherwise I hear a talk, think, “Wow, I need to change!” and in two weeks time, keep on living as I have done.

    I’m in.

  3. Firstly, I’m in!
Secondly, I would love it if this was a case of having to get in early to be one of the 50. Pete, Let me know if I’ve missed out (I’ll be stoked) and I’ll find another way of getting a ticket!

  6. I’m in. And let’s pray we not only hit 50 blokes but can go beyond that. And pray that our great God would use this as a defining moment in the lives of men in our church, and therefore in our families and church family – to the honour of Jesus.

  28. I’m interested to know if people have done their research on Mars Hills church, i’ve have and its part of the Emerging Church movement this scares me a little bit as other pastors in this movement have some pretty wacky ideas but in saying that Mark Driscoll seems to be the exception from what i have read and listened to he has his feet solidly in the word of GOD.

  29. Thanks for the concern Trevor as it sure is vital for us to check thoroughly those we commend as teachers of the Word. The tendency of the ‘emerging church’ to undermine the authority of the Word of God is certainly something we need to be especially wary of.

I think your confusion here probably stems from the fact that Mark Driscoll is from Mars Hill Church Seattle, but there is another church in the U.S. called Mars Hill Bible Church (Michigan). And the latter one (ironically, the one with the word ‘Bible’ in the title!) is a significant player in the emerging church movement.

Mark Driscoll on the other hand, has written and spoken extensively about the perils of the emerging church, especially its common disregard for the authority of Scripture. He’s a Bible man and you can be confident not only about being there, but urging your mates to be there too.

  30. I would love to be on board. It is a school night but what the heck!!
To avoid anyone assuming I am hugely techno savvy by having a photo attached before Ken Bryant does, Michelle helped me! Thank you my honey!

  31. I’ll be there :)

Sry for short comment: forgot to put my email in my first attempt in writing a comment so i lost it which is a real pain… so i decided short and sweet 2nd time around :(

  32. Three blokes from our small group are in! Ben Boland, Andy Mair and Michael Hermann. Good on ya lads! I’m not sure what that number takes us up to but I imagine we’ve cracked 30.

  33. +1

Hope I haven’t missed the boat.

  34. You boys have achived fame in your own lifetime!!! You have your name on a website…

seriously though, does the fact that my name does not appear on their list at their website: 300menforjesus.com mean that I need to rebook?

  35. Hi Guy

Not sure how that list was generated but I am sure that I have enough tickets for everybody – whatever you do, please don’t buy your own!!!! I’ll be significantly in debt if you do.

Also, Scott Patch & Brad Herd are in too so that’s at least 34.

  36. 3 more fish – Kelvin, Stan & Greg makes 36 with a few other probables waiting in the wings – we could still make it to 50!
