SCPC Podcast: Freedom Talk 8, Free to Remember

Steve Cree spoke to us from 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 about how the Corinthians celebrated the Lord’s Supper in name only.  The Christians at Corinth didn’t remember Jesus’ body broken for them and were not serving his body (the church) in their actions.

Key Verse

For anyone who eats and drinks without recognising the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgement on himself.

Thanks Steve. It has been excellent gaining an understanding of the cultural issues that are relevant to the book of 1 Corinthians.

Such a simple message of the Lord’s Supper being for the sinful resounded strongly with my experience as a young tacker, not taking communion because I had been going badly in the previous week. It’s been good to expel the religiosity from the Lord’s Supper and focus on grace.

Thanks for all your work on this series.

i realised on sunday morning that i really love the book of 1 corinthians now.. i used to think it was just kinda confusing and trivial

but now i realise that it’s all about christ and him crucified..

gotta be reminded of the cross 50 billion times a day

I guess this is just a clarification (but perhaps a “Rachael, that’s heresy!”). In verse 34 of the passage where it says:
‘If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. ‘
Is ‘he’ supposed to eat at home so that he won’t gorge himself on the Lord’s Supper? And is the ‘judgement’ to come from God cause the Corinthians were dishonouring his name and treating the Lord’s Supper as a glutton-fest (among other things)?
Sorry to ask such trivial questions…
    Thanks heaps!

  • I think you’re on the right track there Rachael and very far from heresy! Paul’s pragmatic advice is that they have a decent feed before they come together to remember Jesus’ death through the Supper – because obviously they’re so focussed on the food that they’re forgetting Jesus, who it represents. But his bigger warning is that forgetting Jesus is not just a ‘woops’ moment but a dangerous pastime if it’s an ongoing pattern of behaviour – as it appears to be with the Corinthians. i.e. if you consistently forget Jesus (don’t remember his death for you and for your brothers/sisters) you will be ‘condemned with the world’ v32 at judgement day (for that is the definition of an unbeliever!). Paul is suggesting that the Lord is ‘judging’ the Corinthians through trials in this life – but that is the loving discipline of a Father calling his children to their senses so they will avoid the ultimate judgement in the next life. Of course, those who are truly his children will always return to humility before the cross of Jesus.

James, the great thing about you is that you remind OTHERS of the cross 50 billion times a day – keep it up brother, you’re a gem!
