Steve Cree spoke to us from Colossians 4:2-6.  The foundation of talking to people about God is to talk to God about people.  Prayer is powerful and reminds us that salvation is ultimately God’s work through us.

Key Verse

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

Colossians 4:2

Bible Reading:  Colossians 4:2-6

Outline:

1.   talking to people about God
2.   talking to God about people

We can praise God that SCPC took delivery of 10 880 copies of Luke’s gospel today ready for distribution to every household in Lismore in late July! What a great gift to offer our neighbours.

‘The Essential Jesus’ is a well presented 80 page book containing: a fresh and accurate translation of Luke’s Gospel; numerous footnotes, helpfully explaining to the modern reader some of the unfamiliar terms and names that appear from time to time; some important background information to Jesus’ ministry from the Old Testament (‘Previously in the Bible’); and a version of the ‘Two Ways to Live gospel presentation’ related back to Luke’s gospel. You can have a look at a pdf of ‘The Essential Jesus’ here.

As a follow up to our looming ‘Got Questions’ series in term 2, this will be a key part of our connect09 year of outreach. The gospels will go out with an invitation to come and hear the talk series in term 3, “Now for Some Questions Jesus’ Asked!“. Afterall, as we saw on Sunday, the gospel not only answers our questions of God but more importantly is about the question God asks of us regarding our response to Jesus.

We will be praying on Sunday that God would be paving the way for many people to accept, read and receive the good news of Jesus. But you don’t need to wait ’til then to start praying.

There’s nothing like seeing a new suburb arise virtually overnight to realise the need for new churches and church planters to plant them. Well not quite overnight, but very, very fast. I was at at the Metro Conference (training for ministry apprentices and their trainers) earlier in the week at Stanwell Tops Conference centre, south of Sydney. I went for the same morning walk I did at the Conference last year. Same walk. Same route. Except very different scenery. Thousands fewer trees. Hundreds more houses. And not just in one place but several. In one pocket of a huge and sprawling city, in one part of a massive and growing country.

And who will take the gospel to these new suburbs? New churches will be needed. And people to plant them. And people to make up core groups within them. Let’s pray for God to raise up the people needed for the task. For it is the ascended Lord Jesus who showers the people needed for it (Ephesians 4:11-16).

A friend and I have been joking recently about some of the things that we would say to each other if we were really being honest. One of these would be to replace the word “pray” with the word “worry”. For example, when someone shares a concern or struggle with you, you respond by saying, “I’ll worry about that for you”. Or the next time we see them we let them know we’ve been thinking of them: “How’s it all going, I’ve been worrying for you heaps” - see how it works? Sad, but often so true!

How hard we modern Christians find it to pray. How hard we find it to stop “playing God” as if our lives were really in our own control. How hard we find it to stop worrying and simply DEPEND on God.

In my quiet times over the last couple of months I’ve been reading through the books of Chronicles in the Old Testament. These books tell the story of the kings of Israel and then Judah, of their successes and their failures. But through all the action, the overarching lesson that God’s people had to learn and re-learn was to trust him, to depend on him, to seek him and NOT to rely on their own strength for victory.

It struck me as I read, just how consistent the message of Chronicles is with the gospel of Jesus Christ and just how much I need to learn and learn again to actively place my trust in God and not in myself. And prayer MUST ALWAYS be the starting point and the most fundamental expression of true faith. And the great thing is that as we pray, God promises to deal with our worries and everything falls into its proper place (Philippians 1:6&7).

So to paraphrase that great hit of the 80s: “don’t worry, be… praying!”

Steve Cree spoke to us from Luke 18:18-30.  The key to connecting with people isn’t knowing all the answers but asking questions that get them thinking about the one who is the answer – Jesus.

Key Verse

A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”. “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good–except God alone.”

Luke 18:18-19

Bible Reading:  Luke 18:18-30

Outline:

1.   our questions of God
2.   God’s questions of us
3.   Q & A
