Steve Cree spoke to us from Luke 23:32-43. Gambling goes back to the original Good Friday when the soldiers cast lots for Jesus’ clothes – not seeing the greater prize on offer: forgiveness of sins. Don’t make that mistake, gambling for lesser prizes and settling for lesser hopes. The best bet, the only bet for real hope is Jesus.

Key Verse

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.”

Luke 23:34

Bible Reading:  Luke 23:32-43

Outline:

1. gambling on Good Friday?
2. gambling with eternity

This is the conclusion of Melissa Gaudron in her review of the documentary The Life of Jesus (Sydney Morning Herald, ‘The Guide’, Monday 6 April, page 18).

The Life of Jesus is a documentary to be screened on Good Friday at 1pm on Channel 7.  It’s produced by Australia’s John Dickson, the director of the Centre for Public Christianity (‘which sounds a little too much like the Ponds Institute’, writes Melissa).

No prizes for guessing what the doco is about – it’s called ‘The Life of Jesus’, which says it all… or does it?

Melissa is seems to appreciate the many random facts about Jesus’ life which the show reveals (and who doesn’t like obscure details about the life of celebrities?).  Among the surprising facts about Jesus, she notes that Jesus the carpenter would have been pretty buff, and he had a tendency to hang out with ‘major sinners… a lot’… in fact, she is so surprised by what she learns about the life of Jesus that she concludes ‘if Jesus were alive today, he’d be looking to befriend some bad dudes who had a bit of money and liked physical work.  Sounds like a candidate for the NRL to me…’

‘The Life of Jesus’ really is about the life of Jesus – and Melissa finds this appealing.  Jesus was a typical bloke who walked the earth.  We can identify with him.  However, she notes that even though the documentary is ‘couched as historical biography, bits of theological statement and dogma can’t help but creep in.  But hey, it’s Easter.  Suck it up.’

It’s good to hear that at Easter (even if not the other times of the year), we are allowed to make a link between the historical details about the life of Jesus and our beliefs about him.  I suspect that this link often surprises many people – it seems a bit weird that Christianity, a religious belief, can be grounded in historical events and a real live person.

Perhaps the person who compiled the TV program on the very next page of ‘The Guide’ would question a link between history and belief.  The programme for Channel 7, at 1pm on Friday lists ‘The Life of Jesus’ with a short blurb: ‘The fictional story of Jesus Christ’s life as told in the bible’ (p19).

The life of Jesus:  Historical biography?  Theological dogma? Or Fiction?

Jesus was a typical bloke who lived and died.  However, the claim that Jesus came back to life (was resurrected) puts him in a totally different category to every other typical bloke in history.

As Melissa Gaudron wondered: what if Jesus were alive today?

We had our pizza and tough question event at Richmond River High today. It went really well. There were about 20 students there and many of them were there for the first time. There were heaps of great questions and Jasmine and me were warmed up from last week at Lismore High.

It was another great opportunity to answer students questions with Jesus. Thanks heaps to Jasmine for helping out and everyone else for praying for the event. Please pray that the students will come back next term to hear a more detailed answer to their questions.

Also please pray for the SRE teachers in the three local High Schools. Please pray that they will make the most of this great opportunity to talk about Jesus and that God would soften the hearts of the students.

Jobie Dajka is the sort of name that sticks in the memory (even if I did have to look up the spelling!). If you’re into track cycling you may remember Dajka as the former Commonwealth Games gold medallist and world champion. But it’s more likely that you remember Dajka as being at the centre of a drug scandal in the lead-up to the 2004 Athens Olympics for which he was banned from the sport for 3 years. Yesterday, Jobie Dajka was found dead in his Adelaide home. The cause of death hasn’t been given, however it is known that since the scandal in 2003 Dajka has struggled with both alcoholism and severe depression – the result of his dramatic fall from grace.

But Jobie Dajka wasn’t the only “disgraced” sportsman in the news yesterday. It was also revealed that swimmer Nick D’Arcy had been expelled from the Australian World Championship team for assaulting a fellow swimmer last year. I wonder how he will respond to having his hopes and dreams dashed. Will he simply “move on” with life, or will he be so devastated that he will question whether his life still has any meaning? I don’t know the bloke, but I prayed for Nick D’Arcy this morning – that this situation will indeed force him to question the meaning of life and that somehow, in God’s grace, he will find it in Jesus.

It seems to me that if you place your hopes and dreams anywhere other than in Jesus, life is inevitably very disappointing. Completely meaningless. Nothing truly satisfies. In a few weeks we begin our ‘Got Questions’ series at SCPC and we’ll be kicking off with the very fundamental question: “what is the meaning of life?” If you have ever asked this question and really struggled to find a satisfying answer, why don’t you come along. Or if you know someone who seems less than satisfied with the way their life is turning out – please invite them. It could be the most loving thing you ever do for them.

We’ve sorted through all the question cards gathered over the last couple  of months, along with all the questions submitted via the website… and settled on the FINAL TOP TEN QUESTIONS being asked in Lismore about God, the life and the Bible, to be addressed in our ‘Got Questions series in church (Sundays 9:30am & 6pm at Lismore High) starting May 3. Click here to watch a one minute video presentation of the questions (also listed below). We look forward to seeing you during the series.

1. what is the meaning of life? may 3
2. can you really trust the Bible? may 10
3. how could a good God allow suffering? may 17
4. is it right for God to judge? may 24
5. can there really be just one true religion? may 31
6. hasn’t science disproved Christianity? june 7
7. isn’t the church behind war and injustice? june 14
8. why are Christians such hypocrites? june 21
9. why did Jesus have to die on the cross? june 28
10. I’m happy and content, why do I need God? july 5

Steve Cree spoke to us from Romans 12:1-8 and Acts 2:42-47.  Our response to the gospel of God’s mercy is not just individual, but together. So also with mission: healthy outreach happens as the overflow of healthy church. As we play our part in the church we play a part in mission.

Key Verse

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function,so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”

Romans 12:4-5

Bible Reading:  Romans 12:1-8 and Acts 2:42-47

Outline:

1.    “therefore… each member belongs to all the others”       Rom 12:1-8
2.    “all the believers were together”                                              Acts 2:42-46
3.    “And the Lord added to their number…”                              Acts 2:47

‘Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” (Luke 19:39-40)

It’s from a scene often referred to as “The Triumphal Entry”. Jesus is heading for the cross. He enters the city of Jerusalem riding on a colt, and the crowd shouts out their cries of joy! – but the Pharisees tell Jesus it’s time for them to shut up.

‘They’re making too much noise! They’re stealing all the attention! Get them to cut it out! Who do you think you are!?’

“I tell you,” Jesus replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

Ever pictured stones crying out? Try picturing it now – a choir of stones shouting “Hosanna in the highest!” That’s how glorious Jesus is – even the rocks will shout his praise. He made everything, after all. Us. The rocks. The mountains. All creation. If we don’t praise him, another part of his creation will. He’s the Almighty God. All creation will bow down and praise him eventually.

This high and glorious (not to mention biblical!) picture of Jesus is often missing from Christian songs written in the last few decades. Sad, really. If we lose sight of the great glory of Christ – the Almighty God – the Sovereign Lord of all – high and above all understanding – we’re missing out, and we won’t praise him as he deserves.

That’s why we’ll be singing “Almighty God” (by Tim Hughes, off “Holding Nothing Back”) at church from now on. After all, it’s either us, or the rocks.

Hi all

This Sunday at both 9:30am and 6pm church we’ll be revealing Lismore’s top ten questions about God, life and the Bible to be addressed in our Got Questions series starting 3rd May. We’ll also post them on the site early next week so stay tuned.

Thanks to everyone who submitted questions over the past couple of months. We haven’t been able to work in absolutely every question asked (e.g. “why is it so hard to get out of bed in the morning?”), but it’s amazing how many of them are covered by  one of the ten in the final list… there’ll definitely be at least one or two to interest everyone.

Today at Lismore PHATT (people hearing about the truth – christian lunchtime group) we had a ‘pizza’ evangelistic event. The regular PHATT kids invited their friends to come a long for a feed of pizza and to ask their tough questions about Jesus, God and the Bible. Thanks heaps to those students who did invite their friends.

About thirty students came a long to eat pizza (mainly) and to ask their tough questions. The questions that the students asked are listed below:

  • What’s the difference between Judaism and Christianity?
  • How can God be everywhere?
  • Why is God cruel?
  • Is it alright to believe in Christianity and evolution?
  • What is the meaning of life?
  • Why did God create us in this shape and form?
  • Why did God create people like Hitler?

The event seemed to go pretty smoothly and we had a great opportunity to talk about Jesus. We have invited all the students to come back next term as we spend more time looking at the above questions.

Next Wednesday we are doing a very similar event at Richmond River High please pray that students invite their friends along and that we are able to clearly and effectively talk about Jesus.
