SCPC Podcast: Got Questions Talk 6, Hasn’t Science Disproved Christianity?

Steve Cree spoke to us from 1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5. Science has its roots in Christianity as Christians took delight in discovering the order woven into creation by our Creator. Human pride however has used (especially in recent strident attacks) our growing knowledge of the creation as a new way to reject our Creator. Bu this is not the necessary conclusion of scientific endeavour – it’s just that we are committed to unbelief and our pre-supposition ‘there is no God’ feeds the claims of some scientists rather than establishes them. In any case, too much is claimed for science: as if our only knowledge is scientific knowledge. In Jesus Christ we meet someone who both controls reality and makes sense of it in totality. So start with Jesus and the science question will fall into place.

wasn’t it liberating to hear that we don’t have to become experts on the claims of evolution and how to refute them to discuss this question?

It was also good to think about the faith that it takes to believe some scientific assumptions. Think too about alternative philosophies – some of the things people believe in, listen to, put faith in (crystals, talking plants, tea leaves…) are much more unbelievable than the claims about Jesus. Don’t be shy to talk about Jesus!

It is a relief Katja that we don’t need to have a degree in science to refute evolution, as most of their arguements have basic flaws or assumptions built in to them. A lot of people who have found evolution a stumbling block to them believing the gospel have been helped by the Creation.com web site. This web site offers answers to questions to like “If God didn’t create the sun until Day 4, then how could each of the previous three days have had an evening and a morning?” from a scientific and creationist persepective. There are technical articles for those who want an in depth answer. As Steve said, you don’t have to be an idiot to believe the Bible.

Whilst I’m fully convinced that the Creationist view on Genesis etc is both biblically and theologically correct, I don’t want anyone who thinks differently to feel they have to be a Creationist to be a Christian. I think this is the sort of thing Paul was saying in 1 Cor 8:13. I don’t want an evolutionary or a creationist view to be a stumbling block to anyone trusting in Jesus as Lord and Savior.
