Read Luke 23:35-43
Jesus is sneered at, mocked, insulted and taunted. However, in the midst of all of this, Jesus does not retaliate, threaten or rage back at others. This leads to a criminal being convicted that Jesus was innocent, and he was the promised King.

Reflection Questions

  1. What do you think the people watching were thinking? (verse 35)
  2. Why do you think the rulers were sneering at Jesus? (verse 35)
  3. Did the rulers really think Jesus was the King of the Jews? (See John 19:21)
  4. What sort of convictions did the criminal in verse 40 feel about his own sin and Jesus’ innocence? What implications does this have for the criminal’s life after death?

Family Around the Table
Are you feeling anxious about people dying? What hope beyond death do believers have, according to verse 43? Pray together about any anxiety you are feeling and thank God for the sure hope we have and his sovereign care and power.
