As we gear up for a year focussed on mission, praying for the opportunities we have to share the message of Jesus is a great place to start. On Sunday we heard from Liz (AM church) and Jasmine (PM church) about the weekly prayer meeting that has recently commenced – it takes place each Thursday from 7am in the Park Ave building. The purpose of the meeting is that as we grow in our prayer for mission we will hopefully start growing in our action in mission.

So what happens at this weekly prayer meeting? At the start of our time together we hear from God’s Word and spend a couple of minutes in quiet confession and praise to God – reflecting on the Bible passage we’ve just heard; we pray for the personal opportunities we have to share the Gospel in our community – for those we have contact with in our day to day life as well as the opportunities that exist through the various ministries of our church; and we pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ overseas who are standing firm in persecution and hardship.

Both Liz and Jasmine reminded us of the great privilege we have as God’s people to talk to Him in prayer, and that we can place full confidence in the fact that God both hears and answers our prayers. Without prayer our labor in the Lord really is in vain – God is the one that’s in control of everything and the only one who makes gospel mission fruitful.

So set your alarm clock a little earlier (perhaps that means setting your alarm time to AM if you’re a Uni student!) and join us each Thursday from 7am in the Park Ave building and let’s get geared up for mission together!

Matt Simpson spoke to us from 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 where we heard how Paul used examples from Israel’s history to show how people who trust in outwards things fall under God’s judgment. His call is to respond to God’s faithfulness from the heart and so to truly turn from idols and sin.

Key Verse

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!

1 Corinthians 10:12

Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Outline:

Intro: lessons from history

2.   Israel’s sinfulness (v 6-10)

This week the Bible Reading is a part of an item sung by Peter Yock. The song is called Lead Me.

During the school holidays youth group had their annual week long camp – safari. This year’s camp was quite a big one with 57 people going along to brave the cold at Afterlee (back of Kyogle) and the Yarrahapinni campsite (Grassy Head). As we opened to the book of 2 Peter, the theme for the week was “All you need to know”. We were reminded that the Good News of Jesus is all we need to know to help us grow as Christians, it’s all we need to know because it’s true, it’s all we need to know when people try and tell us otherwise, and it’s all we need to know until the very end.

There were plenty of highlights from this year’s camp (check out the video below), but by far the most encouraging thing that happens on every safari, is seeing so many young people keen to grow in their relationship with God. The leaders would often tell me about the many conversations they had with different students in their groups, each being geared around God’s Word and the desire to really KNOW Jesus.

On a personal note, I was challenged by the guys in my discussion group to be more intentional when it comes to talking to my friends about Jesus. One of the group times we had during safari was all about planning a bring a friend event for the upcoming term – picking one friend, praying for them and inviting them along to the event that we decided on (a golf day for our group). In this particular group time the guys really took charge. They talked about the importance of telling others about Jesus, about ideas on how we can make Jesus more of our everyday conversation with friends and with each other, and then prayed for one another to be bold to talk about Jesus. Very encouraging stuff from a bunch of 16 year old guys!

I’m constantly reminded of the great group of young people God has put in our church family. You’d think with 57 people all sharing the same space for 6 days it’d do anyone’s head in. But being the group they are the week was hassle-free (apart from wake up alarms needing to go off numerous times), and was a great time learning together from God’s Word. All the leaders survived to tell the tale of safari ’08. Thanks to all those that helped with the logistic side of things for safari – it was very much appreciated. Please pray that the high schoolers that went on safari would continue to grow in their relationship with God, and the things they learnt wouldn’t be forgotten. And pray that the leaders would follow up the conversations they had with the youth, and that they’d follow Jesus’ example as they lead high schoolers. If you went on safari ’08 make sure you leave a comment and tell us what you were challenged by from God’s Word.

The first week for term 2 at youth group kicked off with a night called Youthsurge. Here’s some info on it all from one of the youth leaders, Nicky Pryor.

Nicky, for those that don’t know, can you please tell us what Youthsurge is?

It’s basically a combined youth groups night with other churches on the North Coast. Youthsurge is a ministry group from Sydney and they organised everything for the night: a couple of ice-breaker games, music, and a Bible talk. All we had to do was provide the youth group. The night was a great follow-up time for all the friendships that were made at the youth convention we had earlier in the year.

What did you (and all the other youth groupers) learn from God’s Word at Youthsurge?

The theme for all the “surges” this year is about temptation. It was a great reminder to me that I’m not immune to temptaion, and that high schoolers are bombarded with it at school, particularly through peer pressure. The clear message from what we looked at in 1 Corinthians was that we are all tempted but God is in control and can help us not to fall into temptation. The night was especially helpful for me as a youth leader to think more about accountability with the girls in my group – asking them regularly what sort of worldly things are being thrown at them, and how they are going at living like Jesus in times of being tempted.

I hear you went along to a training day for youth leaders on the Saturday (also run by Youthsurge), what was something helpful from that session and was there anything that came out of that we can pray about for you?

The topic for the training session was on longevity in ministry and how to balance it all with work and rest. It was good just to hear how other youth leaders are going with ministry in their church, and the sorts of things they’ve found that have worked, as well as the things that haven’t worked in teaching high schoolers about Jesus. Something I was challenged about on a personal level was not to have a conquer-all type attitude to ministry, but to know it’s God that does the work in those He puts under our care. Please pray that I would have patience, knowing that God is the one growing young people to be more like Jesus, and that I would be thankful for the opportunity to serve the girls in my small group.

Thanks Nicky! If you’re a youthie and went along to Youthsurge, post a comment and let us know what you learnt and what else you enjoyed.

In this bible talk from Hosea chapters 3-11 by Matt Simpson, we come to know how God’s love and God’s anger hang together. God is undoubtedly loving towards His people but angered by sin. It’s at the cross that ultimately we’ll see God’s love and anger meet.

Key Verse

When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. But the more I called Israel, the further they went from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images.
