This week’s Bible Talk took us to 1 Tim 5:1-16 where we saw that even the weakest members of the kingdom have something to offer in the service of the king. Such people shouldn’t be neglected but enlisted in productive service.

Ruth 1-4
Aaaah… Ruth! What a breath of fresh air!
Sandwiched in-between the sorry tale of the failure of Israel’s judges and kings we find this idyllic little love story! It’s a bit of a chick-flick but after all that gore and bloodshed, a bit of PG romance is fine by me!
There’s so much to comment on [...]

Judges 20-21
The book of Judges finishes on a very low note. But then that shouldn’t really surprise us – the WHOLE BOOK has been full of “low notes”! The last verse – ‘In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit’ – sums up the problem pretty well. The sort of [...]

Judges 12-14
It’s hard to know exactly who the most famous of the judges is, but I reckon it’d have to be between Gideon and Samson – probably with Samson winning the race in a photo finish. The story of Samson has all the features of a classic drama – a flawed hero, a dangerous liaison, [...]

Judges 9:1-11:21
First of all, sorry I’ve been such a slacker! being away at METRO conference last week through me out a bit and a bunch of other things have meant that the blogging (for my part at least) has been a bit scarce! However the good news is that I’ve been hanging on for dear [...]

Deuteronomy 30:1 – 32:47
There’s a massive tension in these chapters. In chapter 30, Moses sums up the choice before the people: “see, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction… now choose life” (Deut 30:15, 19), and yet in the same breath he hints that the people will choose death: “this day [...]

Deuteronomy 24-27
I find it amazing how day after day as I read God’s law, my inclination at many points is to think “that seems a little unfair/bloodthirsty/harsh/unloving etc etc etc”. The only possible explanation for this is that I must think that I know better than God!
It’s amazing that he puts up with me!

Deuteronomy 20-23
Wow!
Ya go away for a couple of weeks and 14 days pass you by! Funny that…
Reading Deuteronomy 20 (which the NIV subtitles “going to war”) I couldn’t help but think of Paul’s instruction for Timothy to “fight the good fight” in 1 Timothy 1 & 6.
No-one likes the idea (let alone the reality) of [...]

Numbers 4-6
These chapters deal with the preparations for moving the tabernacle (even Israel had a pack-up team!) and also 2 very specific examples of the role the tabernacle was to play in the life of Israel.
The first of these 2 examples relates to how to resolve jealousy that arises when a husband suspects his wife of [...]
