SCPC Music

Music is a gift from God. It’s a valuable part of our church services, and can be an enriching part of our Christian lives. At scpc we sing songs that are soaked in God’s word, and songs that help us to reflect on God’s word. Scripture-soaked songs can actually teach us God’s word. They also give us an opportunity for prayer and praise to God, and an opportunity to encourage each other. In a very real way, God can – and does! – use good Christian music to help us grow in our relationship with him.

That’s why the scpc music page is here. We want you to listen to these songs through the week, and keep growing in your relationship with Jesus. You can listen to the songs here on the website, or download them to burn to a CD or listen to on an mp3 player.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

On Sunday we sang a new hymn called “This Life I Live” celebrating the fact that we who died with Christ now live for him, and live in hope of a glorious resurrection. The song is by Michael Morrow and there is a free recording of it performed at NTE09 here. There is better recording of it available through Emu Music on there Undivided Album. You can buy the Emu Music recording of it through iTunes for $1.69! Here are the lyrics:

This life I live is not my own
For my Redeemer paid the price
He took it to be his alone
To be his treasure and his prize
The things of earth I leave behind
To live in worship of my King
His is the right to rule my life
Mine is the joy to live for him

I died to sin upon the cross
I’m bound to Jesus in his death
The old is gone and now I must
Rely on him for every breath
With every footstep that I tread
What mysteries he has in store
I cannot know what lies ahead
But know that he has gone before

There is a voice that pierced the grave
A power that rolled the stone away
A sound of life, I know I’m saved
The voice of God has called my name
So I will rise, and in the air
Behold the glory of the King
I will not fear to meet him there
I know my life is hid with him

Words by Augustus Montague Toplady, music by Sam Herd and Mick Hardy

Lyrics:

Rock of ages cleft for me

Hide me now my refuge be

Let the water and the blood

From your wounded side which flowed

Be of sin the double cure

Save from wrath and make me pure

Not the labour of my hands

Can fulfill your law’s demands

Could my zeal no respite know

Could my tears forever flow

All for sin could not atone

You must save, and You alone

Nothing in my hand I bring

Simply to the cross I cling

Naked, come to you for dress

Helpless look to you for grace

Foul, I to the fountain fly

Wash me, Saviour, or I die

While I draw this fleeting breath

When mine eyes shall close in death

When I soar through realms unknown

Bow before the judgment throne

Hide me then my refuge be

Rock of ages cleft for me

Music & lyrics by Mark Altrogge.  Performed by Sam Herd.

Off the album Come Weary Saints by Sovereign Grace

Lyrics:

Shall I take from Your hand Your blessings
Yet not welcome any pain
Shall I thank You for days of sunshine
Yet grumble in days of rain

Shall I love You in times of plenty
Then leave You in days of drought
Shall I trust when I reap a harvest
But when winter winds blow, then doubt

Oh let Your will be done in me
In Your love I will abide
Oh I long for nothing else as long
As You are glorified

Are You good only when I prosper
And true only when I’m filled
Are You King only when I’m carefree
And God only when I’m well

You are good when I’m poor and needy
You are true when I’m parched and dry
You still reign in the deepest valley
You’re still God in the darkest night

Oh let Your will be done in me
In Your love I will abide
Oh I long for nothing else as long
As You are glorified

So quiet my restless heart

Quiet my restless heart

Quiet my restless heart

In You

Oh let Your will be done in me
In Your love I will abide
Oh I long for nothing else as long
As You are glorified

Original words by Christina Rossetti (1930-1894), 1885. Words reworked by Sam Herd & Pete Thompson. Music by Sam Herd.  Performed by Sam Herd Christmas 2010.

Lyrics:

Love Came Down at Christmas,
Love incarnate, love divine;
Love was born at Christmas,
Star and angels gave the sign.

Love stayed not a baby,
Love grew up in human time
Love gave all for sinful men,
to say again “you’re mine”.

Immanuel, our God is with us
Immanuel, our hope, our trust, our life
Immanuel, our God is with us
Immanuel, our hope, our trust, our life

Love came down at Christmas
Love incarnate, love divine;
Love took on himself our death
And gave the gift of life

Immanuel, our God is with us
Immanuel, our hope, our trust, our life
Immanuel, our God is with us
Immanuel, our hope, our trust, our life

Worship we the Father,
Worship we the Son,
Worship we the Spirit,
Love Divine

Immanuel, our God is with us
Immanuel, our hope, our trust, our life
Immanuel, our God is with us
Immanuel, our hope, our trust, our life

A special THANKS to everyone for allowing me to teach a bunch of songs written by myself and katharine this year. I’ve always wanted to try writing congregational songs but haven’t known whether it was something I’d be gifted at. And even once you’ve written a song it’s hard to tell whether it works well as a congregational without trying it in church. So I’m very thankful for the opportunity I’ve had to write and teach my songs to the church family this year – it’s been a surprising source of encouragement, and I hope to do more of it in the future.

‘Reckless Love’ was my first congregational and although there is an OK version of it recorded live in church, I’ve never had a particularly good recording. So I thought before my time at SCPC was up it’d be good for katharine and I to put together a better recording – posted below for free download. I hope you’ll download, be encouraged, and continue to sing from the heart.

Today in church, while celebrating the Lords Supper, we watched a animation of ‘The Prodigal’ by Sovereign Grace Music. Click here to watch it again on youtube.

Sovereign Grace Music put out excellent Christian music – including many songs we sing together at church (eg. ‘The Glories of Calvary’, ‘I Have A Shelter’, ‘Before The Throne of God Above’, etc). ‘The Prodigal’ is off their album ‘Sons and Daughters’. I highly recommend buying Sovereign Grace Music albums. Listening to good Christian music helps us in our relationship with Jesus – well worth investing in.

At church today while celebrating the Lord’s Supper we listened to ‘Hold On’ by Lifetone (otherwise known as Wade Iedema’s band). Have a listen and read on to find out Wade’s thoughts behind the song. Click here to download the ‘Hold On’ mp3 for free from Lifetone’s official website

From Wade…

“Unfortunately I’ve seen too many Christians fail to grasp the enormity of the hope they have in Jesus.  When things turned a bit sour in life, instead of clinging to the hope they had in Jesus, they let go and turned to the world for answers. Don’t get me wrong, life can be tough; for some people it’s enormously painful.  But we need to hold on to the real hope found in Jesus Christ rather than sell out for short term and ultimately futile solutions offered by the world.  Jesus’ death and resurrection provides the only satisfactory answer to the suffering and hopelessness of our world.”

In the coming months, Lifetone plan to release an EP for digital download only. Stay tuned for more details.

Lyrics…

Life took your dreams
Then kicked you down
Said, “This is it
What goes around”

So they tell you,
“One thing is sure
This is all there is
There is no more”

This life is but a night
A day will come to light

Hold on
To this hope
Don’t give in
Don’t sell out

Hold on
To the One
Who gives hope
Hold On

So they tell you,
“Live for today
Forget tomorrow
These things wont change

Cause this is it
What goes around
Grab what you can
While it all goes down”

This life is but a night
A day will come to light

Hold on
To this hope
Don’t give in
Don’t sell out

Hold on
To the One
Who gives hope
Hold on

Hold on
To this hope
Hold on
To the One

But there is One
Who gave his breath
Who took the curse
Who has beaten death

And there is One
Who brought us life
Beyond our dreams
He reigns on high

Hold on
To this hope
Don’t give in
Don’t sell out

Hold on
To the one
Who brings hope
Hold on

Hold on
To this hope
Hold on
To the one

Hold on
To this hope
Hold on
To the one

“In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who as able to save him from death… we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 5:7, 4:15-16)

right click here to download –> Christ for me

my God ever faithful
when i am but faithless
helping my weakness
pleading for me

in all his perfection
his glory crowned suffering
temptation to throne
when Christ was for me

I cry to my saviour
his tears gone before me
casting all hope
in my greatest of need

a confident sinner
eternally holy
approaching his throne
where Christ is for me

how endless a comfort
in all of my weakness
what joyous relief
in Christ’s sympathy

now singing victorious
in Christ my redeemer
pardoned, restored
for Christ is for me
