Music
Music is a gift from God. It’s a valuable part of our church services, and can be an enriching part of our Christian lives. At scpc we sing songs that are soaked in God’s word, and songs that help us to reflect on God’s word. Scripture-soaked songs can actually teach us God’s word. They also give us an opportunity for prayer and praise to God, and an opportunity to encourage each other. In a very real way, God can – and does! – use good Christian music to help us grow in our relationship with him.
That’s why the scpc music page is here. We want you to listen to these songs through the week, and keep growing in your relationship with Jesus. You can listen to the songs here on the website, or download them to burn to a CD or listen to on an mp3 player.

Before you came, we were imprisoned by the law
Before you came, we were in slavery to the world
But then you came, you bought us back and set us free
You took the curse, and paid the price that we might be
We’re sons of God
Because of Jesus
Children of God
All one in Jesus
And we cry “Father!”
By your Spirit
We’re sons of God
And we are free
Now sons of God, it’s like we never even sinned
When Jesus died, he took us through the grave with him
Our hopeless lives were killed with him upon the tree
Now he’s alive, and we’re alive, and we are free
We’re sons of God
Because of Jesus
Children of God
All one in Jesus
And we cry “Father!”
By your Spirit
We’re sons of God
And we are free
How could we walk away from you?
How could we turn to something new?
How could we doubt the promises
Of God the Father, to his sons?
Now we are free, don’t let us ever walk away
Help us to stand, and not return to slavery
Help us bear the fruit of grace within our hearts
Move us to walk the way of loving sacrifice
We’re sons of God
Because of Jesus
Children of God
All one in Jesus
And we cry “Father!”
By your Spirit
We’re sons of God
Because of Jesus
Children of God
All one in Jesus
And we cry “Father!”
By your Spirit
We’re sons of God
And we are free

Defender of this heart
You loved me from the start
You never change
Through the highs and lows
As seasons come and go
You never fail
Day after day
Your love will remain
Faithful and true
You are good
You are God with us
You’re victorious
You are strong and mighty to save
For your word stands true
There is none like you
And when all else fades, you remain
When troubles come my way
You guide and you sustain
Lead me, I pray
Forever you will be
The great eternal King
Now and always
Day after day
Your love will remain
Faithful and true
You are good
You are God with us
You’re victorious
You are strong and mighty to save
For your word stands true
There is none like you
And when all else fades, you remain
You are God with us
You’re victorious
You are strong and mighty to save
For your word stands true
There is none like you
And when all else fades, you remain

A big thanks – on behalf of the music and sound ministry teams at SCPC – goes to Trevor Hodge and Lara Goudie for an incredibly encouraging weekend of music ministry training. We hope and pray that the words of ‘Be My Joy’ – the great song Trev sung for us this morning during the Lord’s Supper – would, in Christ, be true for us, and for our whole church family. Make sure you have a listen and feel free to download below…

Be my joy
Be my one desire
Be my light
My consuming fire
Be my shelter
Against the storm
Be my hope
Now and ever more
Give me hope
In your kingdom to come
And give me strength
To endure the way
By your spirit
Who dwells within
Keep me faithful
Until that day
When every knee
In heaven and earth
Will bow before
Your glorious throne
And every tongue
Confess you are Lord
Jesus my Lord
You alone
Can forgive my sin
Your blood poured out
It has washed me clean
And as your body
Was broken for me
This bread of life
It has set me free
When every knee
In heaven and earth
Will bow before
Your glorious throne
And every tongue
Confess you are Lord
Jesus my Lord
So be my joy
Be my one desire
Be my light
My consuming fire
Be my shelter
Against the storm
Be my hope
Now and ever more

Although this song’s been posted on the website before, I thought it was worth posting again since we got a much better recording this time (thanks Jason Coughran!). But more so, ‘His King’ is inspired by the part of 1 Samuel we’re looking at this week as a church family (1 Samuel 1:1-2:11). It’s a great part of God’s word, and I hope this song helps you to reflect on it.
If you hit the Play button below you’ll hear both the spoken introduction to the song, and the song itself. Or you can download the mp3 which is the song without the spoken intro. Performed by Matt Simpson, Pooch, Ryan Davis, and myself.

His King (25 Apr2010 no intro) <– Right click here to download
O God of hosts, will you look on my affliction?
God above, do you see the bitter tears?
O Lord of all, are you so far from your creation,
That you don’t see, that you don’t hear my anxious fear?
O Mighty God, have you remembered my vexation?
Almighty Lord, have you forgotten that I grieve?
Judge of the earth, have you observed all my temptation?
My deep distress, and the bitterness from which I weep?
Father lift my eyes to see
That your hand is taking me
From the ash heap to his throne
From the grave into his home
From troubled soul to rejoicing in this King
From bitter tears to singing praises to this King
My heart is strengthened in His King
O Holy One, revive my soul with your affection
Loving Lord, move my heart to feel your peace
O Holy Rock, guard my mind with your protection
For only you will see me through these roaring seas
Father lift my eyes to see
That your hand is taking me
From the ash heap to his throne
From the grave into his home
From troubled soul to rejoicing in this King
From bitter tears to singing praises to this King
My heart is strengthened in His King
So let your judgement fall from heaven on
All the ends of earth
So let your thunder roar from heaven but
Save your faithful ones
For you are the Judge of all you
Kill and bring to life
You will exalt your Holy King and
Save us by his might
O Father God, forgive my heart of accusations
Sovereign Lord, please wipe away my hurtful deeds
O Holy One, forgive me for all my addictions
And strengthen me, that I might see you’ve set me free
Father move my soul to see
That your hand has taken me
From the ash heap to his throne
From the grave into his home
From troubled soul to rejoicing in this King
From bitter tears to singing praises to this King
My heart is strengthened in His King

Today in church the Balogh family celebrated the dedication of little Mishka: Akos & Sarah declared that they would raise Mishka as a follower of Jesus, and we all prayed together that Mishka would grow up to put his personal trust in Jesus, never ceasing to hold on to what Jesus has done for him at the cross. As part of the dedication Sarah sung “Song for my Son”:

This is a song for Mishka for when he understands it
You know our lives are full, you know we couldn’t plan it
Your Dad and I pray for strength and understanding
For things we cannot see or comprehend
This is a song from my heart a small refrain to hold you
For times when we’re apart and I cannot console you
I can’t say your life will always go like it should
But I can say that God is always good
And when the cold wind blows like I know it will
And when you feel alone like I know you will
And when the cold wind blows like I know it will
Oh just hold on to, Mishka hold on to,
Oh just hold onto the cross
This is a song for Mishka for when he understands it
You know our lives are full, you know we couldn’t plan it
Your Dad and I pray for strength and understanding
For things we cannot see or comprehend
This is a song for you to carry in your pocket
Take all our love with you in all the paths you walk in
Love others as yourself and don’t forget to pray
And read your Bible every day
And when the cold wind blows like I know it will
And when you feel alone like I know you will
And when the cold wind blows like I know it will
Oh just hold on to, Mishka hold on to,
Oh just hold onto the cross
Oh just hold on to, Mishka hold on to,
Oh just hold onto the cross
This is a song for you
Oh, like my love for you
This is a song for Mishka for when he understands it
You know our lives are full, you know we couldn’t plan it
Your Dad and I pray for your strength and understanding
For things you cannot see or comprehend

Via Dolorosa is Latin for “the way of grief”, and is the name of the road in Jerusalem that Jesus walked along carrying his cross to his crucifixion.

Via Dolorosa (Good Friday 2010) <– Right click here to download
He traded his crown for a crown of thorns
He picked up his cross and laid down his sword
He stumbled down the road
Bruised and beaten for me
Jesus walked the way of grief
Hallelujah!
On the Via Dolorosa
All my sin was carried away
And the power of hell was broken
As he gave his life away
He knew what was to come from the very start
But his love for all the world beat inside his heart
He climbed the road of suffering
To the hill of Calvary
Where the saints would be redeemed
Hallelujah!
On the Via Dolorosa
All my sin was carried away
And the power of hell was broken
As he gave his life away
Jesus fixed his eyes
Upon the new horizon
Soon he would arise
And the world would be forgiven
Jesus fixed his eyes
Upon the new horizon
Soon he would arise
And the world would be forgiven
Hallelujah, Jesus rose again!
On the cross he shed his blood at Calvary
And I’m thankful for the journey of my King
On the Via Dolorosa
All my sin was carried away
And the power of hell was broken
As he gave his life away
As he gave his life away
He traded his crown for a crown of thorns

I’ve written a new song for SCPC to sing as we meditate on 1 Timothy together, it’s called ‘mercy today’. it’s about the mercy found in Christ, the perfect one, who came to the world to save sinners like me. we’ll be learning it at church from term 1, and the plan is to write a new song for each term in 2010.
as i’ve been reading through 1 Timothy each day i’ve started – for the first time – to write a bit of poetry, to help me meditate on what I’ve read. it’s been both helpful and enjoyable, and that’s where the lyrics came from. i recommend it.
you can listen to the song here, or download the mp3 to use as you wish. special thanks goes to my cousin Jonathan Normand for recording it for me, and to Pete Hodsdon for lending my his guitar while i was staying in Sydney.

mercy today <– Right click here to download
the glorious news of the blessed God
that grace overflows in Christ and his love
that we who have failed to love and obey
receive endless life and mercy today
the beautiful word Christ speaks to his church
deserving acceptance and trust in it’s worth
Christ came to the world, to the lost and depraved
to the hopeless and weak, we sinners to save
when he appeared in a body
the Spirit cried ‘not guilty!’
angels bathed in his beauty
nations heard of his glory
when he appeared in a body
the Spirit cried ‘not guilty!’
the world believed on his mercy
he ascended in glory
Christ came to the world, to the lawless and damned
we ungodly sinners, we unholy men
we sexually stained, and blasphemous fools
to save us from death, and make us as pure
when he appeared in a body
the Spirit cried ‘not guilty!’
angels bathed in his beauty
nations heard of his glory
when he appeared in a body
the Spirit cried ‘not guilty!’
we believe on his mercy
we rejoice in his glory
the glorious news of the blessed God
that grace overflows in Christ and his love
that we who have failed to love and obey
receive endless life and mercy today
