Personal opportunities: It’s a really great thing to be praying for ministries that reach out to our community with the gospel. But perhaps the first thing we should be praying about regarding our local mission is the opportunities for gospel witness in our own lives and situations. Who can you be reaching out to with the gospel in your own life, and how? Pray for these opportunities.

MOPS is a Christian play-group designed to meet the needs of all mothers whose children are under school age. MOPS offers a haven for frazzled nerves, an encouraging, accepting atmosphere where a mum finds out she is not alone.

  • pray that more community mums would come and would be open to responding to the gospel.
  • pray that Christian mums at MOPS would be bold in sharing the gospel with non-Christian mums that come along and build gospel focused relationships with mums from the community.

Global Economic Climate

In recent days, the global financial markets have faced dark times. Governments around the world rally to resolve the crisis and are faced with the possibility that if nothing is rectified soon, a second great depression may develop. Many are asking questions as to how this will affect the poorest countries around the world and appeals have gone out to the governments to not neglect their commitments to financial aid and  assistance.

Prayer Points:

  • That uncertainty caused by the economic global crisis will cause people to seek the security found only in Jesus Christ
  • That Christians would lead radically different lifestyles that value radically different things
  • That Christians would realize the opportunity this presents to speak the gospel and that they would speak it

Steve Cree spoke to us from 1 Corinthians 12:12-26.  In our sinfulness, our differences can lead to divisions and pride.  God’s design for us, like the human body, is that differences lead to interdependence and service.

Key Verse

The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body.  So it is with Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:12

Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:12-26

Outline:

1.   one body            12:12-13
2.  “but you don’t need me…”    12:14-20
3.  “but I don’t need you…”        12:21-24
4.   equal concern    12:25-26

The Bible Talks is a Christian group at southern cross university. The focus is on promoting Jesus Christ. This involves a weekly meeting  for students to invite their friends so they can hear about Jesus and check out the truth for themselves, and small bible groups where students are encouraged in how to promote the gospel through their entire lives.

  • Pray for the many students who live day in day out without knowing Jesus and that saving life of knowing God he brings.
  • Pray that Christian students would be excited about the love of Jesus and be eager to build friendships with unbelievers and share the good news with them.

Prayer Points:

  • That at this time, Christians may hold fast to the Truth and not despair but see the treasures of heaven
  • That people may question the hope and security they have in money, challenged to  give up their idol of money and turn to the true hope, the one and only God.
  • That governments may continue to have compassion on those in poverty around the world and continue to provide aid and resources to those.

Hi everyone at SCPC! Thanks so much for the friendly welcome last weekend– it’s great to get to know you all a little bit more, and it just made me all the more impatient for 2009; for my move to Lismore and the start of my ministry with TBT.

I was particularly encouraged when listening to the Bible talk on Sunday – Steve preached from 1 Corinthians 12:1-11, an important reminder of how we are all united in the one Lord Jesus.  However, while united in the one Lord, each of us serves Jesus and his people in different ways.  As a new TBT staffworker for 2009, I got a bit excited about this passage – it really helped me think through TBT’s uni ministry, and in particular, how TBT and SCPC work together in service of Jesus.

Next year, some of us will be involved at the ‘frontline’ of evangelism at uni.  The TBT students and staff will spend lots of time on campus, and we’ll seek many opportunities to share Jesus with uni students.  This will be an important part of connect 09 – seeking to make Jesus known in Lismore.

However, this doesn’t mean it’s just the TBT staff and students who are involved in serving Jesus at uni.  In fact, everyone at SCPC is vital to this ministry – even though not everyone might have the opportunity or gifts to hang out on campus, or to chase students around the pillars with TBT fliers (Susan’s specialty), or to shoot Bibles into the plaza from a specially built spud-gun (ask Nicky for more details!).

While us TBTers are able to spend stacks of time on campus, there are heaps of different ways we’d love you to share in ministry with us at uni.  Some of you might visit TBT occasionally to check it out; others could pray for students and the uni;  others might be able to give financially to TBT’s ministry…  Regardless of how each one of us is involved in TBT, we are all united in seeking to have the good news of the gospel proclaimed at uni so that many students willingly confess “Jesus is Lord”.

The TBT staff and students would love to have many people from SCPC join with us in uni ministry – whether it be by praying, giving, chatting to us about what we get up to… Please pray about how you can be involved!

In Christ,
Katharine

On Sunday, Katharine Crosslé shared with SCPC a bit about the changes that are happening in TBT.   One of these changes is that she will be employed by the Australian Fellowship of Evangelical Students (AFES), and not SCPC, as Wade is.  This means that TBT fundraising is now done a little differently.  To help clarify the changes, here are a few facts about AFES and TBT:

  • Who are AFES?… The Australian Fellowship of Evangelical Students co-ordinates over 40 Christian groups (just like TBT) on uni campuses all around Australia.  They employ people (like Katharine) to serve Jesus and the students on campus, and to train the students in serving and proclaiming Christ at uni.
  • If you’re an existing supporter of TBT… we would love it if you would continue in partnership with TBT’s gospel ministry.  To do this, you can fill out one of the green AFES Financial Response Forms (dating the direct debit to begin on 01/01/09), and then in January, cancel your existing direct debit to the old TBT account.
  • If you’re thinking about supporting TBT… The TBT ministry is expanding – Katharine is the first TBT female staffworker, and in 2010, Akos Balogh will come on board to oversee TBT’s ministry.  An expanded ministry requires more funds – and we’d love as many who are able to join us in TBT’s ministry by giving financially.  As we shared on Sunday, many people giving just $10 or $20 a week will go a long way to supporting the TBT staff and ministry.
  • If you’ve decided to support TBT financially… it’d be a great help if you could fill out one of the green AFES Financial Response Forms and either post it to AFES, or put it in the Everything box at church.  AFES requires that Katharine has 75% of her finances pledged before she can start work on campus in January – so these green forms are crucial to getting TBT off the ground in 2009!  Alternatively, you can give online to TBT (www.afes.org.au/_donate)
  • If you’d like to pray for TBT… For more details, chat to Nicky Pryor or grab one of Katharine’s fliers from the welcoming desk.

Steve Cree commenced our term 4 series speaking from 1 Corinthians 12:1-11.  The Spirit has gifted each of us differently.  But this is not for our own benefit: the gifts are for the good of others.  This diversity enriches our ability to have one focus: proclaiming Jesus as Lord.

Key Verse

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

1 Corinthians 12:7

Outline:

1.  spiritual = Jesus       12:1-3
2.  spiritual = service    12:4-6
3.  spiritual = others     12:7-12

Friday night youth is a ministry at our church that seeks to reach out to high school students in Lismore with the gospel. There is an averages of 40 kids, with half a dozen non-Christian kids coming along each week. Please pray:

  • that the young people would continue to grow in their relationship with God, through reading the Word and that they would live out their faith at school.
  • that the leaders will continue to build relationships with the youth and to encourage and spur them on in serving the Lord.
  • that the Christian students doing the HSC would hold firm to the hope they have in Christ and that this time would strengthen and deepen their faith.

three more Christians murdered in Orissa

INDIA – Two more Christians were killed in Orissa state after Hindu extremists set fire to nearly 400 homes last week. A local Christian, who wished to remain unnamed, told Compass Direct News that after killing the two men, the assailants massacred cattle belonging to village Christians and burned Christian-owned houses. During this attack, Lalji Nayak and 14 others were wounded. Nayak died from axe wounds and his wife received a serious head injury from an axe blow just below the ear after a Hindu extremist mob attacked their village.  Read more about the violence in Orissa and also seek justice on behalf of persecuted Christians in Orissa.

Prayer points:

  • pray for the Christians in Orissa state, whose houses were set on fire; pray for their homes and churches to be either repaired or rebuilt as needed.
  • pray for Nayak’s widow, Mandaki, to recover from her head injury.
  • pray for the violence to cease in Orissa state.

It’s been a couple of years since our last “blokes go…” (check out that little Hamish in the photo!) and I know that many blokes have been hanging out for this year’s event. Well it’s not too much longer to wait. BGB’08 will be held at Afterlee from 5pm Friday 21 Nov (arrive when you can) to 3pm Saturday 22 Nov.

This year our focus will be to build on all the good challenges from the 50men Brisbane trip. We really want to bridge the gap between wanting to be real Christian men and actually being real Christian men – between the desire and the doing. And to do that, we need each other – iron sharpening iron. It’s not rah-rah chest beating stuff. It’s blokes just talking honestly and committing to leave the old bloke behind and put on the new bloke.

So crack out the old tent, dust off your billy and give some thought to where you really want to grow as a fair dinkum Christian bloke.

Caption competition: ever wanted to put words in Simon Allery’s mouth? Here’s your chance! free rego to the best response.

More BGB’08 details to follow.

Pete Thompson spoke to us from God’s Word about how God’s character determines his actions. Only when we understand what God is like (gracious & compassionate etc) will we understand how he acts and grasp the magnitude of our salvation.

Outline:

1.  what makes you angry?
2.  the history of God
3.  God and Jonah
4.  God and us
